Ehdrigohr
Limited Capacity seats available

Ehdrigohr is a tabletop role-playing game where you get to play a character struggling to survive in this recovering world. It is a fantasy game of high heroics, myth and culture, powerful magic, and survival horror. The tides of darkness are overwhelming but this is not meant to be a game of nihilism. It is about hope. Your characters are the mythic heroes who do impossible things that push back the tide.

Culturally, Ehdrigohr is a non-traditional fantasy world. Rather than fantasy seen through a Euro-Medieval lens, Ehdrigohr is instead crafted to take inspiration from the myth and folklore of tribal, and indigenous, cultures around the world.

Dark Tower World Championship Round 1
The 1st and 2nd rounds will each consist of first-time players, and will produce the 8 finalists who will compete in Round 3.Small prizes will be awarded to the finalists, and if a single Champion wins, they will be able to select a prize from the Tournament Champions' Prize Pool.

The World’s First Dark Tower Tournament!

You probably either have no idea what we’re talking about, or you’re amazed we’re having this tournament. In 1981, Dark Tower was released to the public by Milton Bradley. It was the world’s first electronic board game, and it was both beautiful and a lot of fun to play. Unfortunately, it was also partially stolen from a pair of game creators who showed a similarly-structured game to Milton Bradley the previous year. There’s a lot of background surrounding the whole affair (sign up for our panel on the topic if you’re curious), but the practical effect was that this excellent game was only produced for a few years. Working complete copies have been getting quite rare over the past decade, but ValorCon has procured four of them, and for the first time in history, YOU can enter a tournament to see who will be the World Champion!

Indie Development: Meaning not Meme-ing
Limited Capacity seats available

Gone are the days of behemoth publishers being the sole judges of which games get published or not. Thanks to crowdfunding sites, consumers get to directly support development. Indie initiatives like Steam's Greenlight and Xbox's ID make it easier to get your game out to the masses. It's easier now than ever to innovate the market, and the people have spoken: they want something different than Minecraft clones or FPS shooters. They want something personal and meaningful.

We will provide the “practice sabers” and the instruction as we guide new learners step by step through the basic principles of a lightsaber duel. By the end of the workshop they will be able to perform a short fight of their own and will walk away with the feeling that the Force truly is with them.

Battle Royale: Star Wars VS Star Trek
The greatest and most important debate in human history gets the knock-down, drag-out treatment as E.D.G.E. Theatre presents a unique demo in which we take prominent weapons and fighting styles from our favorite fiction and apply them to real life fight situations.

In our Battle Royale we debate each style’s individual merits, exploring how to apply techniques, explain the theory behind each fighting style and build up to a hardcore stage fight with an ending determined by you!

Come root for the Lightsaber or Bat’leth as our fighters delve into moQbara and Form VII (Juyo/Vaapad) and demonstrate their effectiveness. The demo will consummate with an epic fight for your enjoyment, showing the versatility and effectiveness of the legendary ferocious Bat’leth (made of Beskar) as it clashes full force against the elegant and civilized lightsaber.

Cheer for your favorite side, and end this debate one and for all!

Each turn players place cards to build up the game board by overlapping squares of like color. Each card has a grid of 2x3 squares with two of the five colors represented. If a player expands an area of color to be the largest number of squares on the board (of that color), they then claim it with a control marker. Whoever controls the most colors when the last card is played wins – or you can lock out your opponent and immediately win the game by capturing all five colors at once!

Time Cellist (Age 13 and up)
Limited Capacity filling up

One of the most awesome aspects of attending a gaming con is the opportunity to not only try unusual, inventive RPGs you might not normally run across, but occasionally you can play them with the designer who created it - like now!

Let your inner history buff run wild as you pick the setting where the forces of good and evil square off in their epic battle! Feudal Japan, Victorian England, Ancient Egypt, or America in the 1980s...whatever you like! Players take on the role of a plucky group of kids saving the world from the Maestro of Maliciousness, a time traveling super villain bent on taking over the time stream. But the kids don’t have to take on The Maestro by themselves. They’ll be aided in their quest by Time Cellist, a cello-wielding hero, traveling through time making sure The Maestro’s plans are foiled.

The game’s set-up and mechanics are designed to emulate the frenetic, ensemble cast feel of movies like the Goonies or E.T., or TV shows like Young Justice or Doctor Who. You and your friends are creating a heroic story about how saving the world just so happens to bring your gang closer together and helps you to overcome obstacles as a group.

Palace of the Silver Princess
"Not long ago, the valley was green and animals ran free through golden fields of grain. The Princess Argenta ruled over this peaceful land and the people were secure and happy. Then one day, a warrior riding a white dragon appeared in the skies over the castle, and almost overnight the tiny kingdom fell into ruin. Now only ruins and rumors remain, and what legends there are tell of a fabulous treasure still buried somewhere within the Palace of the Silver Princess." Play in the very first D&D adventure written by a woman! This adventure was redone based on its artwork and some content, but we'll be playing through the original version. Pregens will be provided.

Dark Tower World Championship Round 3
This 3rd round will narrow the competitors down to two Champions, who will then have the option of facing off for the number one slot! Small prizes will be awarded to the finalists, and if a single Champion wins, they will be able to select a prize from the Tournament Champions' Prize Pool.

Board Games From Pop Culture
Board games are more popular than ever; over the last 10 years board game sales have been rising 10 to 20 percent per year. But in an increasingly-complex mediated world, and as the digital has become the buzzword of the decade, how to make sense of this meteoric increase in popularity of such low-tech entertainment? In my research, I've explored the relationship between media products and the board games that are based on them ("paratextual board games"), and in this talk, I'll look at some of the ways that these board games slip into our contemporary media environment.

The dancers and firespinners of Raks Geek have performed everywhere from Spain to Argentina and dance for hundreds of people every week, but they're also lifelong geeks who bring a love and expertise in science fiction, video games, technology, and comics. Speakeasy: A Mob-Themed Hidden Role Party Game

Speakeasy is a game of social deduction. Think Werewolf + the social manipulation of Survivor + the last five minutes of the Godfather. It runs about 75-minutes, for 10-40 people. It is simple to learn, but has lots of room for strategy and rewards repeat playing. Speakeasy can be played at home, in a pub, or anywhere the group can fit. It is not turn-based—the game happens continuously at the speed of your strategy.

Of Dice And Men - A Play Reading By Otherworld Theater
Limited Capacity seats available

“Few dungeon masters can make the game come to life better than John Francis. Dwarves, Mages and Barbarians jump right off of their character sheets whenever he sits down at the gaming table of frisky suburbanite parents, Linda and Brandon. John Francis’ best friends, sailor-mouthed John Alex and thoughtful jock Jason, bring roguish swagger and knightly nobility to the game. And the object of John Francis’ affection, the feisty Tara, provides all the Half Elven Double Princess backstory they could ever need.

But when Jason enlists to go to Iraq and with the relationship with Tara going nowhere, it may be time for John Francis to hang up his twenty sided dice and take a job on the other side of the country. However, John Francis is about to discover that leaving will prove tougher than the Tomb of Horrors.”

This play by David M. Ewalt will be read by the cast from Otherworld Theatre, who performed it recently in Chicago. OT is a priceless gem in the Chicago scifi/fantasy scene, as their mission is to bring a theatrical experience to the science fiction and fantasy genre. The play is a celebration of geek culture, gamers, and friendships formed through gaming.

Play one of the game's five classes: Hacker, Engineer, SlumMerc, Cyberized, or Artificial Intelligence (A.I., also called Ghosts). Queerness in Games
This panel is to discuss the difficulty of portraying queer sexuality in games. A problem that has been a larger part of fiction for some time, games' fictions tend not allow much exploration of what it means to have sexuality outside of heteronormative ones. This is seen in either heteronormative models placed on the relationships present, being entirely too superficial, queer baiting, and just generally lacking content with which to engage. We would also discuss some games who are exploring this in their various indie games, and how this can set a model for the type of content that would be very welcome.

Not Designing a Heartbreaker
Limited Capacity seats available

Game design is enjoying an invigorating renaissance. Digital publishing, crowdfunding, and internet distribution are making it possible for just about everyone to make a game. Despite the lower bar for entry there are still plenty of heartbreakers being made, games that someone puts a lot of thought and love into that never go anywhere.

Like anything game design is something you get better at with experience. However, design veterans Will Hindmarch and Nathan Poletta from the RPG Design Podcast, and RPG mavens James D'Amato and Kat Kuhl from the ONE SHOT Podcast Network can help you from making the critical missteps that lead to heartbreak.

Axon Punk: Overdrive
Axon Punk: Overdrive is a sci-fi roleplaying game set in a cyberpunk world 70 years in the future. The game's ultralight mechanics are geared toward player improvisation, story-telling and collaboration in a gritty, dystopian world hyper-infused with digital/neural connections. Try out a taste of the system in a fast-paced, 2 hour demo where your team infiltrates a mid-level corporate lab. Play one of the game's five classes: Hacker, Engineer, SlumMerc, Cyberized, or Artificial Intelligence (A.I., also called Ghosts). Each class can improvise and gain narrative control using specific abilities to build new tech, write software or navigate society and the Net. After the game, please stick around and share your highly valued feedback on our rules, setting and very experimental A.I. class.

Keep Calm and Game On
No matter what platform we game on or what types of games we like to play there, we are all gamers. So why is it so hard to get along sometimes? This panel, presented by a mix of casual and more "hardcore" gamers, will discuss just that.

We will also look at how we can start erasing the differences that separate us and focus instead on our common love of games. Because broadening gaming beyond a narrow definition will help us all in the end.

VStheUNIVERSE: The Evolution of Gaming
You can see the origins of games in the rumpus-like behavior of kittens and puppies. Our instincts as mammals push us to learn survival skills through roughhousing, chasing, and discovery. Now that we seldom need to evade predators or kill our food, games serve primarily as entertainment, with varying degrees of educational and social aspects. How has the balance between those three elements of gaming changed through the industrial and digital ages? What predictions can we make for the next 50 years

Halcyon Theatre presents a reading of
In Love and Warcraft
By Madhuri Shekar
directed by Tlaloc Rivas

Evie Malone—gamer girl, college senior and confirmed virgin—has it all figured out. Not only does she command a top-ranked guild in Warcraft with her online boyfriend, she also makes a little cash on the side writing love letters for people who've screwed up their relationships. Love is like Warcraft, after all. It's all about strategies, game plans, and not taking stupid risks. But no amount of gaming expertise can help her out when she’s next to a handsome, non-virtual, boyfriend, who is ready to rock all of her worlds.
